Haitian Families Are Living in Fear and Uncertainity After TPS Ends. We Need Your Voice Today.

Last night, we gathered with members of our peer support community. Among them was a Haitian woman we'll call "F" to protect her privacy.

F came to the United States from Haiti when she was just 12 years old. She has now lived here for more than 30 years.

She also survived 13 months in immigration detention.

She told us about developing anemia in detention, struggling with unstable blood pressure because of the food she was given, and witnessing things she never imagined she would see. Even after her release, the trauma remains. Today, she rarely leaves home except for legal appointments as she works to heal.

Many Haitian TPS holders now face the same fear and uncertainty F described.

More than 330,000 Haitian TPS holders across the country now face the possibility of detention, family separation, and deportation.

“The question before us is not whether they deserve to stay because of the work they do. Haitians deserve safety because they are human beings. No one should be forced back to conditions that the U.S. government itself warns are too dangerous to enter,” said Rosa Santana, Co-Executive Director of Envision Freedom Fund. “I once held Temporary Protected Status after coming to the U.S. from Honduras, and I understand the uncertainty and fear these families are living with.”

TPS was first granted to Haitians after the devastating 2010 earthquake because returning home was unsafe. Today, conditions are even more dangerous. Armed groups now control much of Port-au-Prince.

"For people who have already survived displacement, detention, and profound trauma, stripping away TPS is not simply an administrative decision," said Kate Johnson-Powers, Post-Release Manager at Envision Freedom Fund. "It is another act of violence that places Black immigrant communities directly in harm's way."

Congress Can Still Act

Envision Freedom Fund is urging every U.S. Senator to co-sponsor S.4814, legislation that would extend TPS for Haitians until after January 20, 2029.
